It is a passage migrant in spring and autumn, and few of birds sometimes winter.

This is a very common and widespread bird species. It feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers. Northern birds migrate south and winter along any coast that is well-supplied with fish. Forsythia is blooming in late autumn, forgetting the season.

앞날개의 길이 13~21 mm이다. 날개의 앞면은 흑갈색이고 뒷면은 황갈색, 양면에 반투명의 흰 점무늬가 있다. 앞날개에서는 약간 반달 모양으로 7∼8개가 줄지어 있고 뒷날개에서는 가로로 4개가 한 줄로 줄지어 있다. 연 2∼3회 발생하며 5∼10월에 볼 수 있고 벼의 해충이다.

몸길이 18mm, 날개 편 길이 43mm 정도의 소형 박각시나방이다. 머리와 가슴부분은 등황색 털로 덮여 있다. 머리 앞쪽은 암갈색이며, 더듬이는 검은색이다. 배의 1/2 앞쪽은 등황색, 나머지 부분은 검은색이다. 앞날개는 진한 갈색 바탕이며, 가운뎃부분에 2개의 검은색 세로무늬가 뚜렷하게 나 있다.
