몸길이 18mm, 날개 편 길이 43mm 정도의 소형 박각시나방이다. 머리와 가슴부분은 등황색 털로 덮여 있다. 머리 앞쪽은 암갈색이며, 더듬이는 검은색이다. 배의 1/2 앞쪽은 등황색, 나머지 부분은 검은색이다. 앞날개는 진한 갈색 바탕이며, 가운뎃부분에 2개의 검은색 세로무늬가 뚜렷하게 나 있다.

한반도에는 광역 분포를 하는 종이며, 개체 수는 매우 많다. 연 2~4회 발생하며, 성충으로 월동하여 3월부터 11월에 걸쳐 나타난다. 낮은 산지와 숲 가장자리, 민가 주변, 수변지역 등 다양한 지역에서 쉽게 관찰된다. 성충으로 월동한다.
