Birds and I

Male is distinctive, and shows slaty-blue upperparts (crown/nape/wings/tail) except for a large triangular orange patch on the mantle. Upper-breast and throat are a lighter greyish blue; from the lower breast to the vent is a gradient from fiery orange (on the lower breast) to yellow.

Male has an all-dark ebony bill, while female’s bill has a pale brown tip.  Found in lowland to foothill forests, usually in dense areas, but can often be seen in breaks in the foliage, such as clearings or riversides.

Male is black with an iridescent pink-red throat, a red belly, and a glistening blue-green crown. Purple-throated Sunbird is essentially identical, but ranges do not overlap.

The orange-bellied flowerpecker is found in Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Male is distinctive, and shows slaty-blue upperparts (crown/nape/wings/tail) except for a large triangular orange patch on the mantle. Female is much duller, and is mostly drab olive brown overall, except for its pale orange rump and yellow belly.

The red-throated sunbird is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.   Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Van Hasselt's (Marroon-bellied) sunbird is a resident in Sumatra, Java and Borneo. The males have pectoral tufts of yellow mixed with crimson that are used in displays. The adult male is mainly glossy purple with a grey-brown belly.The female has yellow-grey upperparts and yellowish underparts, but lacks the purple's faint supercilium.

The plain sunbird is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. Male has a small black “shield” on his forehead which the female lacks. Female readily distinguished from female Brown-throated and Red-throated Sunbirds by her unmarked face.  Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.
