It is found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Its range includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam.  Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Other species are Blue-winged Minla and Yunnan Fulveta.

The chestnut-throated minla or bar-tailed minla is found in montane forest from India to Malaysia.Eight subspecies have been described. The chestnut-throated minla occupies a range of montane forest habitats from 1,800–3,750 m. The species is mainly resident but may move to lower altitudes during harsh winters, coming as low as 1,300 m.
