It breeds in Mongolia, southeastern China, and western parts of the Russian Far East, where it winters from northern India to eastern China and the Chinese Peninsula (except west-south and south).

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.  The former Taiwan subspecies musicus is usually now considered a distinct species as the Taiwan scimitar babbler.It forms mixed flocks with other species.

It is found in Northeast India and adjacent southwest China and Myanmar.Eastern populations in China have a gray head and orange crown, while western populations in far northeastern India and Myanmar have a dark rusty head.

The rufous-throated partridge is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is montane forests, mainly at elevations of 1,800–3,000 metres.  It was a wonderful and beautiful scene to see a male giving up his feeding activities when a female appeared while doing feeding activities.
