In Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, Korea a leucism Eurasian Nuthatch has appeared,
attracting a lot of attention from birdwatchers.
Lucism refers to a disease in which the skin, fur, feathers, scales, and cuticle layers, except for the eyes of animals, appear white, bright, or mottled due to partial pigment loss. Unlike albinism, melanin as well as a number of pigment deficiencies are the cause.
Leucism refers to a heterogeneous animal caused by skin cell differentiation of hair, feathers, skin cells, or movement defects of nerve cells during the development process.
When all types of pigment cells fail, symptoms appear all over the body or the surface of the body is stained due to insufficient number of pigment cells.
Another difference between whiteness and lucism is the color of the eyes.
Whiteness is red because blood vessels under the epidermis are visible due to retinal pigmented epithelial cells and melanin deficiency in the iris.
On the other hand, the eyes of most Lucism animals are the same as those of ordinary individuals. T
his is because melanocytes in retinal pigment epithelial cells do not originate from nerve function and migrate from the protruding portions of the neural tube that form an optical cup.
Since the embryological origin of these cells is independent, they are free from the influence of genetic causes that cause lucism.
