It breeds in taiga in Siberia. It is strongly migratory, with most birds moving to southeastern Asia during the winter.
It breeds in south-east Siberia, north-east China and Korea.
It is largely migratory, wintering in southern and central Japan, South Korea and southern China.
It breeds in northeastern China and the Russian Far East and winters in southern China and northern Vietnam.
It breeds in dense coniferous forest and taiga eastwards from Siberia and Mongolia to Japan.
